VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The pool play round of the 2016 USCAA Volleyball National Championships has concluded, and the elimination bracket quarterfinals have begun. Beginning on Thursday, 10 of the top USCAA volleyball teams kicked off competition at the Virginia Beach Field House. Twenty games later, eight teams remain. The quarterfinals will be held Friday night, with Saturday serving as the semifinals, third-place game, and National Championship game.
In Pool A, the story of Thursday was St. Mary of the Woods College. The Pomeroys were 3-0 on the day, including a victory over the top seed of the tournament, Florida National University. St. Mary of the Woods completed a sweep of their pool play games on Friday defeating Rochester College in three sets. They will enter the elimination bracket as the top seed from Pool A.
Florida National finished second in Pool A, dropping their game against St. Mary of the Woods, but defeating Penn State Fayette, University of Maine-Fort Kent, and Rochester College. The Warriors of Rochester College finished third in the pool with victories over UMFK and Penn State Fayette. The Fayette Roaring Lions were the final team to advance from Pool A, with a win over University of Maine-Fort Kent. The Lady Bengals from Fort Kent were unable to advance to the elimination bracket.
In Pool B, defending National Champion Florida College swept through pool play in a quest for a third straight title. Following the Falcons in Pool B was Illinois Tech, with wins over NHTI, Carlow, and Alfred State. Carlow finished third, defeating NHTI and Alfred State. The Pioneers of Alfred State finished fourth in the pool with a victory over NHTI. The Lynx were eliminated from tournament contention on Friday afternoon.
In the first quarterfinal matchups on Friday at 4:00 PM, Florida College will take on Penn State Fayette and Florida National takes the court against Carlow University. At 5:30 PM the quarterfinals will conclude with St. Mary of the Woods facing Alfred State College and Illinois Tech taking on Rochester College. The winner of each matchup will advance to tomorrow’s semifinals which begin at 10:00 AM.
